Smiths Detection receives DoD follow on production order for chemical agent detector

Smiths Detection, Inc., announced on Wednesday that it has received a $17.2 million follow-on production order from the U.S. Army as part of the Department of Defense’s Joint Chemical Agent Detector (JCAD) program.

Smiths Detection’s Lightweight Chemical Detector (LCD) product line serves as the basis for the JCAD program and gives the department access to advanced, easy-to-use and lightweight threat detection devices that can be handheld or strapped onto other needed equipment.

The device provides first response stakeholders, including police, firemen and soldiers, with a cost-effective solution that can reliably alert the user if toxic substances and dangerous chemicals are detected nearby.

“SDI has a long relationship supporting the JCAD program, one of the most effective chemical warfare protection solutions for U.S. troops in history,” Stephen Esposito, vice president and general manager of defense solutions at Smiths Detection, said. “SDI is committed to contributing to the success of this program and technology, which is used by service members worldwide.”

The equipment and detection devices that make up the JCAD program are manufactured at a Smith Detection facility in Edgewood, Maryland.

Smiths Detection. is a part of Smiths Group, a global technology business that employs approximately 23,000 people, including more than 8,300 in the U.S.
