Smiths Detection awarded contract for detection systems at Egyptian airports

Smiths Detection was awarded a contract on Wednesday by the Falcon Group worth approximately $24.5 million to provide advanced detection systems for passenger checkpoints, baggage screenings and cargo screenings for airports across Egypt.

Smiths will provide x-ray scanners, people-screening systems and trace detectors as part of a national strategy by the Egyptian Ministry of Defense to provide an additional layer of security at airports.

Egypt will deploy two types of high-resolution imaging systems – the HI-SCAN 6040aTiX and HI-SCAN 6040-2is HR – that utilize software to automatically detect explosives in carry-on luggage. Millimeter-wave eqo scanners that detect threat items of any material under clothing provide an additional layer of security for checkpoints. The IONSCAN 600, which detects and identifies explosives from traces found on baggage or clothing, will also be deployed at baggage screening checkpoints.

The contract also includes two other imaging systems – the HI-SCAN 100100T-2is and the HI-SCAN 145180-2is – for oversized baggage and air cargo security.

“Enhancing aviation security through leading-edge technology is our top priority,” Tony Tielen, regional vice president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Smiths Detection, said. “With a broad portfolio of detection technologies, an excellent customer-orientated sales team and a strong local partner, ITI, we are proud to be a trusted partner of the Egyptian Ministry of Defense. The range of screening systems included in this contract will help provide world-class detection capabilities to protect against evolving threats.”
