New technology targets hazmat safety, security

A pair of firms have secured federal funding to develop an integrated technology designed to enhance hazardous materials safety and security transporters via first responders, hazmat inspectors and transporters.

Officials representing Spill Center, a hazardous materials support and claims management company, and FACTOR Inc., which specializes in advanced safety and security risk management and analysis, are touting the benefits of HazSMART.

HazSMART would aid shippers and carriers by identifying optimal routes based on safety and security factors and local restrictions, officials said, noting that the technology provides a foundation of risk management to reduce the potential for an accident in the hazmat transport planning phase.

“The HazSMART technology will ultimately support decision-making, facilitate emergency preparedness and improve response throughout the hazmat transportation lifecycle,”
Mark Lepofsky, FACTOR vice president and COO, said. “It will also serve as a means to enhance hazmat transportation safety, security and efficiency by providing planning tools that will integrate information on restricted routes, emergency response services, at-risk populations and the environment.”

Spill Center President and Founder Tom Moses said FACTOR is an ideal partner for the project.

“FACTOR provides cutting-edge research and solutions to help clients better manage the risks inherent in their operations,” he said. “The transportation of hazardous materials is vital to the health, welfare and economy of the United States, but the attendant risks must be carefully managed. Shipments must be prepared correctly, transported safely and securely, delivered to the correct consignee and unloaded safely.”
