McSally re-appointed as chair of House Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security

U.S. Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ) was recently re-appointed as chair of the House Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security.

“For Southern Arizonans, the border is an ever-present part of daily life,” McSally said. “It brings incredible economic opportunity, but also significant threats to public safety, such as those posed by smugglers and cartels. I am honored to once again chair a subcommittee that has such importance to the people I represent. I will continue in my role as chairwoman to fight for improved manning and infrastructure at our ports and for a smarter, more effective strategy that places our focus at the border and keeps our communities safe.”

During her time as chair during the previous 114th Congress, McSally’s first hearing revealed that U.S. Border Patrol has situational awareness of only 56 percent of the border. In a later hearing, McSally heard testimony from Southern Arizonans about their experiences living along the southwest U.S. border and conducted panel discussions with local law enforcement, Border Patrol agents, local government officials, business owners, non-profits and ranchers.

“As the first female fighter pilot to fly in combat, Rep. McSally brings a unique perspective on how to better protect the American people,” said House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX). “I look forward to working alongside Congresswoman McSally to help resolve the challenges at the border and better secure our homeland.”

McSally’s first scheduled subcommittee hearing for the 115th Congress is set for Feb. 16.
