Johnson meets with Korean minister of public safety and security

Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, along with a coalition of U.S. officials, met with the Republic of Korea’s Minister of Public Safety and Security Park Inyoung on Wednesday to discuss a range of shared homeland security-related issues.

The coalition included Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Deputy Administrator Joe Nimmich, Coast Guard Rear Admiral Mark Butt and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary for International Affairs and Chief Diplomatic Officer Alan Bersin.

Officials discussed the role of domestic coordination and information sharing to prepare for and respond to disasters and terrorist attacks. The two sides also talked about effective communication between the nations in an effort to foster greater unity between them.

Johnson and Park also emphasized opportunities for increased coordination on emergency preparedness and management, especially between the U.S. Coast Guard, FEMA, and the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Public Safety and Security. Additionally, Johnson indicated his office’s willingness to provide training and support to enhance allied partners’ emergency management capabilities while strengthening bilateral relationships.
