FirstNet awards grants to eight agencies under Band 14 spectrum program

The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) awarded funds on Thursday to eight agencies for its Band 14 Incumbent Spectrum Relocation Grant program.

The program aims to provide financial assistance to eligible public safety agencies for relocating their current radios and systems from Band 14 prior to the deployment and operation of the Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network (NPSBN).

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency will receive $14,025,249.50; the Virginia State Police will receive $7,309,459; the Arkansas State Police will receive $3,830,939; the Massachusetts State Police will receive $1,554,610; the Honolulu County Department of Defense will receive $44,533,38; the Marshall, Michigan Fire Department will receive $23,500; the Stamford, Connecticut Fire Department will receive $15,870; and the Post Falls, Idaho Police Department will receive $13,470.

“Public safety’s needs are our top priority, and we are pleased to be working hand-in-hand with these Band 14 public safety incumbents,” FirstNet CEO Mike Poth said. “The awarding of these grants will help to ensure a smooth transition for these entities while at the same time making sure the spectrum is free and clear for the deployment of public safety’s nationwide wireless broadband network.”

Each agency will have approximately one year to complete its projects and relocate its current radios and systems elsewhere under the program.
