Erbelding appointed as new director of the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at NIAID

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, has appointed Dr. Emily Erbelding as the new director of the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID).

The division provides monetary and other resources for global research into the development of new diagnostics, therapies and prevention tools to fight emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

“Emily Erbelding is a highly regarded infectious disease clinician and administrator who will bring a creative and steady hand to managing a particularly challenging research portfolio—one that encompasses a wide range of pathogens,” Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of NIAID, said. “The job requires intellectual agility, creativity and a commitment to collaboration across government, academic medicine and industry to ensure that we are well-positioned to address both ongoing and newly emergent disease threats. Emily embodies all these qualities and more….”

Prior to her new appointment, Erbelding had been the deputy director of the Division of AIDS at NIAID. Before joining NIAID, she spent 14 years on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases. She has also served as the director of clinical services for the Baltimore City Health Department STD/HIV program.

“I am honored to be chosen to lead DMID. The division supports a broad array of vitally important research, and the staff are talented and deeply committed to advancing science and global public health,” Erbelding said.
