U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers assigned to the Dennis DeConcini Crossing at the Port of Nogales recently arrested a Mexican national after finding approximately $460,000 worth of heroin in the gas tank of his motorcycle.
The incident occurred as officers referred a 32-year old man from Obregon, Sonora, Mexico for a secondary inspection. After a narcotics-detecting canine unit alerted the officers to suspicious activity within the man’s BMW motorcycle, the officers discovered the man was hiding more than 30 pounds of heroin within the motorcycle’s fuel tank.
The motorcycle and narcotics were seized, while the man was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations unit for further processing.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of the nation’s borders at and between the official ports of entry.
