Gen. Scaparrotti holds discussion on countering violent extremism with European chiefs of defense

Curtis Scaparotti

Army Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti, commander of the U.S. European Command, recently hosted a discussion with dozens of senior NATO Leaders and European chiefs of defense on how to counter the threat of violent extremism.

“This fight against terror and violent extremists will not be easy, nor will it be fast,” Scaparrotti said. “It is not a war of choice. It will take resources, determination and resolve to see the end of terror in Europe.”

For his discussion, Scaparrotti focused on five key areas related to counter-extremism, including developing a shared understanding of the threats at hand; strengthening partnerships; new means of information sharing; identifying opportunities to enhance the military network; and building relationships among military networks, intelligence agencies, and law enforcement throughout Europe.

Scaparrotti said his forum was a continuation of a similar discussion held last October by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joe Dunford.

“It is only with the dedication and resolve of allies and partners that we can confront and defeat this transregional threat,” Scaparrotti said. “No nation stands alone and no nation is immune to the threat of violence posed by terror. Let me re-emphasize, we are stronger together when we’re working together.”
