Smiths Detection receives European Union approval for three scanners

Smiths Detection, a manufacturer of threat detection and screening technologies for military and homeland security applications, recently received explosives detection system (EDS) cabin baggage (CB) approvals for three of its scanners from the European Union (EU).

After its HI-SCAN 6040aTiX received its EDS CB C1 standard approval in January, it most-recently received an approval for EDS CB C2.

According to EU regulations, systems that meet EDS CB C1 or C2 standards are automatically considered to have reached EDS hold baggage screening (HBS) Standards 3, which allows scanners to be used in the screening of checked baggage using conventional HBC concept of operations (CONOPS).

Smiths’ HI-SCAN 7555aTiX was also awarded both EDS CB C1 and C2 standards, which means it can screen hand luggage and hold baggage, parcels, and small air cargo.

The company’s HI-SCAN 6040-2is HR also received EDS CB C1 approval.

Smiths Detection said in a release that its software, which brings systems up to new standards, will not only be integrated into the new equipment, but will also be used to upgrade previously-installed scanners.

“With one dual-view and two multi-view X-ray scanner models achieving EDS CB standards, coupled with the development of our HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX system targeting C3 approval, we can now offer a full range of checkpoint systems that meet the new EU regulations,” Cameron Mann, Smiths’ global market director for Aviation, said. “Customers also have the flexibility to choose a system reflecting their individual requirements, in terms of either the required standard, tunnel size or CONOPS.”
