Transportation Security Administration to demonstrate new CT scanners in Phoenix, Boston

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will soon be demonstrating new computed tomography (CT) scanners at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and the Logan International Airport in Boston over the course of the month.

The technology will strengthen threat detection capabilities for TSA personnel by providing three dimensional images that can be viewed and rotated to determine if threats are concealed within a passenger’s luggage.

The CT scanners work by capturing hundreds of images with the use of an x-ray camera that continually spins throughout a conveyor belt. The technology utilizes complex algorithms for the detection of explosives and related threats. Should a threat be detected, TSA officers will physically inspect the luggage to ensure that no dangerous items are present.

The demonstration is being held in conjunction with American Airlines through its Innovation Task Force. Scanners will be placed at Terminal 4 in Phoenix and Terminal E at Boston. At either location, passengers may be asked to volunteer for screening.

“The safety and security of travelers is the number one priority of TSA and our partnership with industry is critical in helping develop innovative and critical security enhancements,” Acting Administrator for the TSA Huban Gowadia said. “We already use this type of technology for checked baggage, and we expect these smaller checkpoint-sized machines will provide the same high level of security.”
