Two Los Alamos researchers recognized for contributions to nuclear safeguards

The Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) recently recognized Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) researchers Nancy Jo Nicholas and Martyn Swinhoe for their contributions to the nuclear safeguards profession at its 58th annual meeting in Indian Wells, California.

Nicholas, who currently serves as LANL’s associate director for threat identification and response, was awarded with the Edway R. Johnson Meritorious Service Award.

Swinhoe, a physicist in LANL’s safeguards science and technology group, received the Vincent J. DeVito Distinguished Service Award.

After joining LANL in 1990, Nicholas focused her efforts as a technical leader in the fields of nonproliferation, arms control and treaty verification technology before moving up to various leadership positions within the laboratory. She currently leads an 800-member team that focuses on nuclear nonproliferation and related global security initiatives.

Swinhoe joined LANL in 2002 as a technical expert for the laboratory’s international safeguard efforts. Since that time, he was worked on the development, implementation, and assurance of technical success for nuclear measurement systems in civilian nuclear fuel cycle facilities.

“Nancy Jo has been a passionate advocate for nuclear safeguards for more than 20 years and, as a manager at the laboratory, grown the workforce’s expertise in this area—enabling success in important nuclear-related national security missions,” Terry C. Wallace, head of the global security directorate at LANL, said. “Martyn has brought to bear his considerable capabilities as a leader and technical expert in nuclear materials management to solve important global safeguards and nonproliferation challenges.”
