TSA phasing in new checkpoint procedure for carry-on electronics

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently began implementing new screening procedures at airports across the country that require travelers to place all electronics larger than a mobile phone in bins for X-ray screening at checkpoints.

Passengers at various U.S. airports, including Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and John F. Kennedy International Airport, are being asked to place these electronic devices in bins with nothing above or below them, similar to how laptops are screened. The new policy will be phased in at other airports over the course of the next few months.

The new procedure allows TSA officers to get clearer X-ray images of carry-on bags.

TSA officers will be stationed near the checkpoint X-ray machines to help travelers through the screening process and recommend how to arrange their carry-on items for X-ray screening. TSA encouraged passengers to keep their carry-on bags organized and uncluttered to aid in the screening process and keep lines moving.

There are no changes to the items travelers can bring through the checkpoint. The new security measures do not apply to passengers enrolled in TSA Pre-Check who are using dedicated TSA Pre-Check lanes.
