TSA sets record for busiest summer ever with more than 239 million travelers screened

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently announced it had the busiest summer in its history, screening 239,511,319 passengers and crew at various TSA checkpoints throughout the country from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

“It is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the TSA workforce as well as the increased traveler participation in TSA PreCheck and Global Entry programs that we were able to effectively screen a record number of passengers in such an efficient manner this summer,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said.

Of those screened, approximately 99.9 percent of passengers waited less than 30 minutes in checkpoint lines, while 99.6 percent of TSA PreCheck passengers waited less than 10 minutes.

According to TSA data, there were 92 days in which checkpoint volume surpassed 2 million travelers and 35 days that surpassed 2.4 million. The highest volume day was June 30, the Friday before Independence Day weekend, when more than 2.64 million passengers and crew were screened.

Additionally, four days in the summer fell into the agency’s top-10 busiest days, with the rest of the list coming immediately after major holidays including Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Thanksgiving.

“I applaud TSA employees for their dedication to creating a better agency and thank them for all they do to protect our homeland,” Pekoske said. “I appreciate and value our strong partnerships with the airline industry, airports, and local law enforcement.”
