Serbian civil servants complete NATO cyber defense advanced training

Civilians working for the Serbian government recently completed an advanced information systems security (INFOSEC) training session organized by NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme in Belgrade and Tallinn.

Twelve representatives from Serbia’s Office of the National Security Council and Classified Information Protection took part in theoretical and practical training sessions that addressed specific cybersecurity concerns like protection of classified information and crisis management.

“It was an excellent opportunity for us to enhance the cooperation between NATO and Serbia in the field of information security,” said retired Maj. Gen. Vello Loemaa of the European Cyber Security Initiative in Estonia, which coordinated the training with Serbia’s government. “We would like to emphasize the high motivation and good spirit of the group that made the event a success.”

Participants learned how to develop and implement new tools based on INFOSEC policies. The training also included best practices for managers to plan, track and monitor the implementation of INFOSEC.

Serbia has played an active role in the SPS Programme in recent years. Serbia has led specific aspects of the framework, including cyber defense, defense against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear agents, counter-terrorism, the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, energy and environmental security.

“We are looking forward to continue the cooperation for secure cyberspace,” Loemaa concluded.
