NNSA’s Radiological Assistance Program (RAP) team leads strategic preparedness training event in Hawaii

The National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Radiological Assistance Program (RAP) team recently led three days of training on countering a potential nuclear threat for more than 70 local, state, and federal responders in Hawaii.

RAP held the event at the request of the state of Hawaii and 93rd Civil Support Team. It included participants from Hawaii’s governor’s office, the University of Hawaii, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Department of Homeland Security.

“NNSA welcomed the opportunity to participate in this important training to enhance Hawaii’s ongoing efforts to help citizens prepare for radiological and nuclear threats of any type,” Dan Blumenthal, consequence management program manager in NNSA’s Office of Nuclear Incident Response, said.

The workshop aimed to give participants an opportunity to discuss planning strategies, help them understand the science behind U.S. government response protocols and enhance their knowledge of their agency’s role in nuclear preparedness.

Follow-up discussions on the Hawaii event and training and outreach for an event on Guam have been planned.
