During a 24-hour period last week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted a total of 12,215 pounds of narcotics valued at more than $9.1 million at ports of entry along the California border with Mexico.

The officers seized 11,895 pounds of marijuana, 227 pounds of methamphetamine, 83 pounds of cocaine, and 11 pounds of fentanyl hidden inside vehicles. They found the drugs in various locations including in seats, speaker boxes, spare tires and quarter panels.

“CBP’s detection and apprehension of contraband plays a significant role in keeping our communities safe and we remain committed to securing our nation’s borders,” Pete Flores, director of field operations for CBP in San Diego, said. “These apprehensions showcase the vigilance and determination the officers possess in combating drug trafficking organizations.”

In one of the largest seizures, officers discovered 472 packages of marijuana with an estimated street value of more than $6.7 million hidden in a trailer with cargo manifested as macaroni pasta. In another seizure, officers found 10 packages of methamphetamine and four packages of fentanyl, weighing a total of 20 pounds with an estimated street value of $469,000.

All persons were arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations for further processing. CBP officers seized the vehicles and narcotics.
