The Kansas Highway Patrol recently announced its decision to subscribe to FirstNet, a nationwide public safety broadband network designed specifically for first responders, become the first agency in Kansas to do so.
The update to their communications gives them access to a secure network that is, in theory, always on. In a statement, the Kansas Highway Patrol said it would help keep their officers connected to critical information and fuel communications during everyday situations or emergency ones alike. The service eventually hopes to provide communications that cross agencies, jurisdictions and state lines to connect their clients.
“We’re proud to be the state’s anchor tenant for this cutting-edge public safety broadband network,” Kansas Highway Patrol Colonel Mark Bruce said. “FirstNet is truly transformational. We’re just beginning to unleash its potential, but we believe it’s a promising solution that will help us do our jobs better and faster – while staying safer.”
In the case of the Kansas Highway Patrol, their decision to join the system was based on three things. For one, they cited FirstNet as the only platform out there which gives first responders priority–no competition, no congested networks. That means constant connection without fear of an overwhelmed system. Second, they pointed to FirstNet’s applications, which gives users access to more info and capabilities. Lastly, they noted that as the system expands nationwide, coverage and capacity can only grow, allowing for access to increased areas, both urban and rural.
