CBP expands ROAM pilot program for tourist admittance to Waterton, Alberta

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has added Waterton, Alberta, as a pilot location for its Reporting Offsite Arrival Mobile (ROAM) application that aims to streamline border crossing processes for pedestrians in high-tourism areas, the agency announced on Thursday.

Expansion of the ROAM pilot program will include travelers to Goat Haunt, Montana, by way of the International Cruise Line or backcountry hiking trails in Waterton International Peace Park in Alberta and Glacier National Park in Montana.

“This is an effective tool for CBP and its officers to facilitate legitimate trade and travel at a location that serves as a must-visit vacation destination,” Area Port Director Daniel Escobedo said. “With technology available to ease the inspection process for the traveler, ROAM will strengthen border security in the Waterton and Glacier National Parks while allowing CBP to effectively complete its mission.”

A ROAM mobile app enables tourists to create a profile, submit travel information to CBP and go through inspection via teleconference. Additionally, four ROAM inspection kiosks will be placed at Waterton Cruise Co. docks for travelers to create profiles and declare travel to the United States on a cruise line.
