FirstNet board approves $84 million budget

The First Responder Network Authority’s board of directors, an independent authority within the U.S. Department of Commerce, recently approved an $81 million budget for operations in fiscal year 2019.

The budget will be used for the focus on the deployment of the nationwide public safety broadband network and public safety engagement.

An additional $81 million was approved in reserve for the authority’s operations, and $78 million was allotted for network reinvestment on behalf of public safety.

The board also approved the exploration of reinvestment opportunities in network enhancements and public safety innovation.

“This action positions the FirstNet Authority for continued success as we work on behalf of public safety to ensure the network delivers what they asked for and evolves to meet their needs,” Sue Swenson, FirstNet Board chairwoman, said. “With public safety’s network currently available across the nation, the FirstNet Authority will now focus on public safety’s vision and Congress’ direction to fully realize the benefits of a dedicated nationwide public safety broadband network.”

Swenson was recognized at the quarterly meeting for serving four years as chairwoman. Her term expires this month.

The authority was chartered in 2012. Its goal is the construction deployment and operation of a nationwide broadband network that equips first responders.
