Bill seeks to assist law enforcement with drug-control efforts

Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) recently introduced the Law Enforcement Resources and Community Safety Act of 2018, which addresses state and local problems associated with drug trafficking, gangs and organized crime, strengthen witness protection programs, and provide resources to keep first responders safe from fentanyl exposure.

“Ensuring the health and safety of families across Pennsylvania is one of my top priorities,” Casey said. “That’s why I’ve introduced these measures to strengthen our existing public safety tools, including new protections against drug trafficking and organized crime.”

The legislative package is made up of three bills, including the COPS Safe Streets Act, the State Witness Protection Act, and the First Responder Fentanyl Safety Act.

The COPS Safe Streets Act authorizes $1 billion in grant funding to fight organized crime and gang-related violence.

The State Witness Protection Act provides resources for witness protection programs and strengthens penalties for witness intimidation.

The First Responder Fentanyl Safety Act makes Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act grant funds available for the purchase of detection devices and personal protective equipment.

“Ensuring that state and local officials have what they need to protect themselves and our communities is a step in the right direction, and I urge my colleagues to join me in this effort,” Casey said.
