Lockheed Martin upgrading US Army’s energy storage, resiliency capabilities

Private contractor Lockheed Martin is actively upgrading the U.S. Army’s operational capability through enhanced energy storage developments.

Some of the upgrades have included a Lithium-based energy storage system, intelligent microgrids and supporting infrastructure to help them function. Ideally, Lockheed officials said, this will help preserve power in the wake of natural disasters, cyber-attacks or shutdown events.

“The energy challenge is an engineering challenge, and that’s what we’ve been perfecting for more than 100 years,” Frank Armijo, vice president of Lockheed Martin Energy, said. “We have a unique range of energy storage solutions, and every system we offer is tailored to our customers’ mission needs. We’re proud to support them as they develop strategies for greater levels of security and resiliency.”

In addition to their Lithium storage system, Lockheed Martin is also currently developing a long duration energy storage solution they call GridStar Flow. Officials claim it will be more flexible, safer and reliable than any other flow battery system, with the capability to deploy power for more than 12 hours.
