FEMA awards Pennsylvania $60 million in grant funding

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently awarded Pennsylvania more than $60 million in grant funding for firefighters.

“Every day, our first responders put themselves in harm’s way to help individuals and families, whether it’s responding to a medical emergency, fire, or accidents, they are there,” MaryAnn Tierney, FEMA Region III regional administrator, said. “These awards are an annual opportunity for FEMA to fund the critical equipment and needs of firefighters and EMS organizations so they can continue doing what they do best: helping their communities.”

The Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program awarded $35.5 million for training opportunities vehicle acquisition, and operational support. Funds are used to purchase life-saving equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus, hoses, and turnout gear.

The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant awarded $24.4 million to help train and retain firefighters.

The Fire Prevention & Safety grant awarded $163,176 to help reduce the risk of fire in communities by providing education, training, and resources. The grant helps communities provide free smoke alarms.

Fire companies, unaffiliated Emergency Medical Services and state fire academies are eligible to apply for the annual competitive grants.

FEMA Region III’s jurisdiction includes Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and West Virginia.
