Triad National Security takes over management of national laboratory

Triad National Security (Triad) recently began the management and operation of the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.

In June, Triad signed a contract with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The contract took effect Thursday and expires in 10 years if all options are exercised.

“The Triad team has the right combination of nuclear science, research and development, and management expertise to protect and enhance the critical national security operations of Los Alamos National Laboratory far into the future,” Ellen Tauscher, chairwoman of the Triad National Security board of directors, said. “Together, we are proud to provide this crucial public service to the nation.”

The laboratory is a multidisciplinary research institution dedicated to enhancing national security. It is tasked with ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile.

Research conducted at the lab includes solving problems related to space exploration, renewable energy, supercomputing, the environment, medicine, infrastructure, and nanotechnology. It also
develops technologies to reduce the threat of weapons of mass destruction.

Triad is a national security science organization equally owned by the Texas A&M University System, the Regents of the University of California and Battelle Memorial Institute.
