Griffiths selected for artificial intelligence panel

José-Marie Griffiths

Dakota State University President José-Marie Griffiths has been selected to serve as a member of the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence.

Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation Chairman Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) recently announced Griffiths appointment to the body, which officials said was established to review advances in artificial intelligence, related machine learning developments and associated technologies.

Griffiths has testified multiple times in front of the Commerce Committee, officials said, noting she has worked in higher education for more than 30 years, focusing academic research on the use of information technology in higher education, the contribution of technology and informatics and health informatics.

“I’m honored to select Dr. Griffiths to serve on the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence,” Thune said. “As chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, I’ve had the privilege of working with Dr. Griffiths and have invited her to testify in front of our committee on several occasions. She is passionate about expanding educational and research opportunities in computer science and cybersecurity and developing a tech-enabled workforce. I’m certain she will be a strong asset to the commission.”

Officials said the Commission was included in the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019.
