Cyber Innovation Lab hosts grand opening

The Cyber Innovation Lab on the University of Central Florida campus held its grand opening last week.

The lab, a collaboration between the university and Lockheed Martin, will address the need for cybersecurity experts.

By 2026, security analyst positions will increase 28 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Lockheed Martin’s Orlando Cyber Solutions business spiked 400 percent over the past five years. The company forecasts the business will continue to grow.

The 970-square-foot lab will assist the more than 350 students enrolled in cyber programs.

“This lab will serve as the campus’ primary hub for students to develop and expand their information security skills, preparing them to enter this high demand field and take on the cyber security threats of the future,” university President Dale Whittaker said. “We are grateful for Lockheed Martin’s longtime partnership and strong commitment to our students’ success.”

Lockheed Martin donated $1.5 million in 2018 toward the lab’s creation and for the purchase of software and technology needed to support to the lab.

Lockheed Martin employees also will provide professional mentoring and cyber training.

In addition to the students, the lab will be used by Hack@UCF, the university’s Cyber Defense Club, as its practice center.
