TSA launches public awareness campaign about new ID requirements

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently launched a public awareness campaign to educate travelers on the agency’s new identification requirements.

Starting Oct. 1, 2020, anyone who flies will be required to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, or another acceptable form of identification. Other acceptable forms of ID includes U.S. military ID, s federal government PIV card or a valid passport.

Anyone who cannot verify their identity will not be permitted to enter the TSA checkpoint or board an airplane.

REAL ID-compliant licenses have a star on the top of the card.

“TSA is doing everything we can to prepare our partners and the traveling public for the REAL ID deadline next year,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said. “The security requirements of the REAL ID Act will dramatically enhance and improve commercial aviation security.”

Signs will begin appearing in airports nationwide in the near future reminding travelers that REAL ID soon will be mandatory.

The REAL ID Act of 2005 established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. It also prohibits federal agencies from accepting licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards for official purposes.

The Act complies with the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations.
