TSA forms Surface Transportation Security Advisory Committee

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials have established the Surface Transportation Security Advisory Committee (STSAC), which will be responsible for providing recommendations on surface transportation security matters.

The committee operates in accordance with provisions of the TSA Modernization Act of 2018, which was signed into law on Oct. 3, 2018. It is composed of voting members representing surface transportation providers and users, as well as non-voting members representing federal departments and agencies with surface transportation oversight.

The STSAC will report to TSA Administrator David Pekoske, meeting at least twice a year. The committee will submit periodic reports on matters the Administrator or majority of members of the committee deem important and annual reports providing information on the activities, findings and recommendations of the committee during the preceding year.

Guidelines specify the 35 voting members consist of individuals representing each mode of surface transportation, such as passenger rail, freight rail, mass transit, pipelines, highways, over-the-road bus, school bus industry and trucking while 14 non-voting members serve in an advisory capacity as the Administrator considers appropriate.

“I look forward to collaborating closely with the newly appointed members of the Surface Transportation Security Advisory Committee,” Pekoske said. “The knowledge and expertise these leaders bring to the table will play a vital role in TSA’s continued efforts to safeguard the nation’s surface transportation systems.”
