LAX to add Guardian Active Shooter Detection System to Automated People Mover Facility

The Los Angeles Airport (LAX) is adding a program that detects gunshots for its new Automated People Mover Facility, interfacing it with the facility’s video, access control, notification, and critical emergency management systems.

The program is part of a joint effort by Shooter Detection Systems (SDS), Genetec and Everbridge. By adding it to the facility’s new train system, they hope to detect gunshots indoors and more rapidly deploy personnel to deal with active shooter situations — critical in all cases, but especially for a system anticipated to support up to 10,000 passengers per hour. The train system itself is part of a 30-year, $4.9 billion contract between the Los Angeles City Council and LAX Integrated Express Solutions.

“The Guardian system continues to be the gunshot detection system of choice for major airports and transportation authorities across the U.S.,” Christian Connors, CEO of SDS, said. “This is due in large part to our success with existing airport installations and our zero false alert history, but we also credit the rigorous testing and independent third-party certifications that qualify Guardian as a true life safety solution.”

By adding the system, LAX joins with other airports such as Charleston International in South Carolina and the Abilene Regional Airport in Texas.
