More than 108 million people screened during spring travel season

A total of 108.6 million passengers and crew and 63.4 million checked bags were screened by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) during the March 14 to April 28 spring travel period, reflecting a nearly 4.7 percent increase from 2018.

The average wait time at TSA checkpoints was 20 minutes or less for 97.2 percent of passengers. For members of the TSA Pre✓ program, the wait time was five minutes or less for 92.4 percent of passengers.

The TSA screens approximately 2.2 million people daily. During the spring break and Easter holiday period, this increased by as many as 400,000 passengers daily.

“During the 2019 spring break travel period, the dedication and professionalism of our TSA officers and the commitment of our security partners were on full display,” Patricia Cogswell, TSA acting deputy administrator, said. “The fact that we continue to break records is a testament to the strength of the aviation industry and our continued and collaborative pursuit of improving security and the overall travel experience.”

The nation’s busiest airport for TSA screenings during the spring period was Los Angeles International Airport with 5.3 million people screened, followed by John F. Kennedy International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
