CBP makes three narcotics seizures prior to holiday weekend

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers made three narcotics seizures last week.

The first seizure occurred May 20 at the Calexico East port of entry between Calexico, Calif., and Mexicali, Mexico.

A canine team detected 64 pounds of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $103,000 hidden in the car of a California man returning to the United States.

The second seizure occurred the following day at Calexico. A canine team detected 144 pounds of methamphetamine with a street value of approximately $230,800 in the truck of an Arizona man.

Both men were arrested after the seizures for the alleged narcotic smuggling and were turned over to Homeland Security Investigation agents.

The third seizure occurred Thursday in the Tucson Sector. Agents seized a modified ultralight aircraft carrying nearly $500,000 in methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Agents tracked the aircraft from the time it entered U.S. airspace to its landing along a rural dirt road southeast of Tucson.

The aircraft was inspected by canine teams that discovered more than 200 grams of fentanyl and more than 143 pounds of methamphetamine attached to the fuselage.

Border Patrol agents and a Marine Corps helicopter crew searched the area but were unable to find the pilot.
