TSA changing performance management systems

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently changed its performance management systems for uniformed TSA officers to improve how performance is measured and recognized as well as to simplify the process.

The changes were based on feedback from transportation security officer advisors, the National Advisory Council, and other experts. Changes will go into effect for the fiscal year 2020 performance year.

“Our uniformed officers are essential to TSA’s ability to meet its aviation security mission,” Patricia Cogswell, acting deputy administrator, said. “It is imperative that we foster an environment that both rewards the hard work and dedication to that mission evidenced by officers across the nation day in and day out, and also recognizes throughout the year those who go above and beyond.”

A new recognition program will join the current two-tier system.

Employees will be evaluated on whether they meet standards. Those who have will be eligible for a pay increase and/or performance award at the end of the performance period based on available funding.

The Model Officer program will identify and reward the highest performers. Model officers will be recognized throughout the year and awarded with monetary awards, additional salary increases above the yearly evaluation and/or other forms of special recognition.
