DHS seeking proposals from colleges to serve as terrorism prevention Center of Excellence

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) is committing $35 million for a new DHS Center of Excellence for Terrorism Prevention and Counterterrorism Research (TPCR).

Colleges and universities in the United States are invited to submit proposals to serve as the center lead or partner with the lead institution in support of the center’s activities.

“By partnering with universities, S&T delivers practical results by developing multidisciplinary, customer-driven solutions while training the next generation of homeland security experts,” William Bryan, senior official performing the duties of the under secretary for science and technology, said. “Once awarded, this COE will leverage emerging technologies and analytic techniques to provide innovative solutions for preventing and countering terrorism.”

DHS will accept proposals through Sept. 6.

The proposed TPCR center would conduct research and develop solutions to support DHS counterterrorism operations and help prevent terror attacks. The TPCR would also focus on technological advances to stay ahead of emerging terrorist tactics. A variety of academic disciplines are required, including engineering, data analytics, and mathematics.

The DHS’s Centers of Excellence are university consortia that work with DHS to educate the next generation of homeland security technical experts. Each DHS Center of Excellence is led by a U.S. college or university and has multiple partners from universities, commercial industry, DHS, as well as other federal, state, and local agencies.
