New York City receives nearly $179M from Urban Area Security Initiative

The Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) recently announced that the New York City area would receive $178.8 million in federal funding to help prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism.

The funding includes an $11.09 million Nonprofit Security Grant Program grant that will be shared by 116 nonprofit organizations that are at high risk of an attack. Funding will be used to improve security.

The funding also includes a $76.9 million State Homeland Security Program grant to help implement antiterrorism strategies outside of urban areas.

“These antiterror funds will help our law enforcement protect and save lives, and it will also provide nonprofits and places of worship that are at risk of being targeted with the resources they need to enhance their security and help prevent attacks,” U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) said. “I’m proud to fight for the funding for this critical program every year in the Senate, and I will always do everything I can to help keep New Yorkers safe.”

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency administers the initiative.

The fiscal year 2019 Homeland Security Grant Program is composed of three grant programs: the Urban Area Security Initiative, the State Homeland Security Program, and Operation Stonegarden.
