Homeland Security grant awarded to North Las Vegas fire department

The Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency has earmarked $203,036 for the North Las Vegas fire department in Nevada’s Fourth Congressional District.

“Our emergency responders in North Las Vegas, and Nevada at large, put their lives on the line every day to defend their neighbors,” Rep. Steven Horsford (D-NV) said. “These well-deserved and necessary funds to the North Las Vegas Fire Department (NLVFD) will bolster efforts from our emergency services to protect my constituents against fires and other hazards that may arise. With the growing threat of climate change, fires become increasingly more common in Las Vegas and the surrounding communities as temperatures rise. Channeling resources to our first responders who work tirelessly to keep our families safe is more important now than ever.”

The NLVFD, which employs 170 people in the Las Vegas Valley, responded to 29,064 emergency incidents in 2017. The department also engages in community outreach programs to educate the community about fire safety, including programs like 9-1-1 Make the Right Call; Stop, Drop-n-Roll; Sparky’s ABC’s of Fire; Supervised station tours for youth organizations; Be cool about fire safety; and Sparky’s S.A.F.E Team.

The federal funding initiative has provided approximately $7.1 billion in grants to first-responder organizations to obtain emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, as well as firefighting and emergency vehicles to pair with training.
