Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) is urging colleagues to take action regarding border security in the wake of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announcing nearly 1 million southwest border enforcement actions.
The ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, Rogers extended gratitude to CBP personnel he said went above and beyond this year as an unprecedented number of migrant children and families arrived at the nation’s southwest border.
“I also applaud the Trump Administration for taking decisive action to bring down apprehensions from this spring’s crisis levels,” Rogers said. “Border apprehensions have decreased 64 percent since May thanks to agreements with Mexico and Central American governments, an expansion of Migrant Protection Protocols, and a number of efforts to improve the integrity of our immigration laws.”
Rogers maintains lawmakers have to lend an assist to the administration in addressing the border matter.
“Instead of pursuing bipartisan efforts to close the loopholes that led to this year’s crisis, House Democrats have only put forth partisan proposals that do nothing to prevent another crisis and have no chance of becoming law,” he said. “September’s enforcement numbers were still higher than six of the last seven previous years. There is only so much the administration can do without Congress. We must act now to secure the border and prevent another crisis.”
