Border officers seize more than 2,400 rounds of ammunition

A joint enforcement effort by the National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and Homeland Security Investigations recently seized more than 2,400 rounds of ammunition at the Boquillas border crossing between Big Bend National Park in Texas and Mexico.

An NPS ranger searched the vehicle of a 47-year-old male Mexican citizen who was traveling southbound. The search uncovered 2,415 rounds of .22 and .25 caliber ammunition.

CBP Anti-Terrorism Contraband and Enforcement Team officers seized the ammunition and vehicle and transported them to the Presidio, Texas, Port of Entry.

The driver was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations. He will face charges for a smuggling attempt.

“We work closely with all our law enforcement partners to help keep the border communities we share safe,” Alex Leos, acting CBP Presidio port director, said. “We remain vigilant to stop any illegal activity to include inbound and outbound violations.”

CBP officers at Presidio also recently seized 13.86 pounds of cocaine while inspecting a 2012 Ford Focus and uncovered five cocaine-filled packages.

The driver, a 36-year-old male Mexican citizen, was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations. He will face charges for a smuggling attempt.

CBP is part of the Department of Homeland Security.
