Justice Department funds to combat Alaska human trafficking

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has earmarked $1 million to combat human trafficking in Alaska via the agency’s Housing Assistance Grants for Victims of Human Trafficking program.

Officials said Covenant House Alaska and the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) would receive $500,000 each to aid efforts.

“Tragically, the scourge of human trafficking exists in Alaska, but I am grateful for the countless organizations and advocates who help victims of all ages return to safe and productive lives with dignity,” Rep. Don Young (R-AK) said. “Over the years, I have been proud to partner with Covenant House Alaska and Alaska Housing Finance Corporation in their vital endeavors to serve the people of our state, including their efforts to provide compassionate care for homeless youth and survivors of human and sex trafficking.”

Young said while work remains to be done in the fight against child exploitation, the funds would help the organizations protect some of the state’s most vulnerable populations.

“I am grateful to the Department of Justice for making this funding available to Covenant House Alaska and The Alaska Housing Finance Corporation,” he said. “We can never fully repay these advocates for the necessary work they do every day, but I will continue fighting in Congress to ensure that our nation’s vulnerable are protected from human trafficking, sexual abuse, and exploitation.”

Officials indicated the Housing Assistance Grants for Victims of Human Trafficking Program supports housing assistance for victims of all forms of human trafficking nationwide, as defined by the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) of 2000, as amended.
