DHS addresses emerging risks in Arctic Region

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has approved a document addressing emerging risks in the Arctic region amid expanded geopolitical interest and competition.

On Jan. 11, then-Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad F. Wolf approved the Department’s inaugural Strategic Approach for Arctic Homeland Security. The Arctic has taken center stage for regional competition and influence.

The DHS noted receding ice caps and increased traffic call for an expanded footprint in several areas that include trade and travel facilitation and cyber and infrastructure security.

In the wake of the Strategic Approach, DHS is prepared to anticipate and respond to the new challenges. The vision outlines a proactive and disciplined approach to implement effective measures protecting domestic Arctic interests while adapting to changing regional conditions.

The three strategic goals targeted through the document are to secure the homeland through the persistent presence and all domain awareness; strengthen access, response, and resilience in the Arctic; and advance Arctic governance and a rules-based order through targeted national and international engagement and cooperation.

DHS is prepared to work around the clock to reach the goals and confront any evolving challenges or emerging threats to protect the homeland.
