Resolution condemns Iranian nuclear weapon pursuits

A bipartisan group of lawmakers recently introduced a resolution condemning Iran’s nuclear weapon pursuits.

Reps. Elaine Luria (D-VA), Kathy Manning (D-NC), Peter Meijer (R-MI), Kathleen Rice (D-NY), Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), and Brad Schneider (D-IL) joined the resolution in the wake of Iran’s decision to enrich uranium to 20 percent purity.

“Iran is a state-sponsor of terrorism and poses an existential threat to our national security and Israel, America’s strongest ally in the region,” Luria said. “Iran cannot be allowed to continue to progress towards a nuclear weapon, and the United States must unequivocally condemn their provocations.”

Rice offered the following regarding efforts to join colleagues in opposition to Iran’s latest efforts to increase its uranium enrichment levels.

“Iran has a long history of engaging in deceitful behavior, aiding terrorist groups, and threatening the United States, Israel, and our other allies,” she said. “We cannot let Iran continue its dangerous pursuit of a nuclear weapon.”

Schneider said preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon is paramount to American national security and the security of international allies.

“In addition, Iran’s long history of support for terrorist organizations and human rights abuses poses an existential threat to peace across the globe,” he said. “We must continue working across the aisle in Congress and with our international allies to condemn Iran’s actions and ensure they can never develop a nuclear weapon.”

Julie Rayman, senior director of Policy and Political Affairs at the American Jewish Committee, said focused attention to Iran’s actions is the type of pressure needed in the U.S. and across the globe.
