Lawmakers urge refrain from Iran approach

A group of lawmakers recently forwarded correspondence to President Joe Biden to encourage a reset if the approach towards Iran versus relinquishing sanctions leveraged over the regime.

Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Pat Toomey (R-PA), and Todd Young (R-IN) sent the letter to discourage a return to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

“We oppose any attempt to return to the failed [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action], or any deal that offers one-sided concessions to the Iranian regime while it continues to undermine the security of the United States and our allies and partners,” the senators wrote. “We hope to work with you on a path forward that prevents Iran from possessing nuclear weapons capabilities, addresses support for terrorism, holds the regime accountable for its egregious human rights violations, and ends its hostage-taking of American citizens.”

The legislators maintain returning to the JCPOA means granting Iran significant sanctions relief in exchange for nuclear limitations expiring in four years and is not a viable strategy.

“We urge your Administration to reset its approach immediately,” the senators concluded. “Members of Congress rejected the JCPOA on a bipartisan basis in 2015. Returning to the JCPOA is not a recipe for a sustainable Iran policy and will not protect U.S. national security interests.”
