Sens. Thune, Hassan introduce bills supporting quantum information science

Sens. John Thune (R-SD) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) introduced last week bills to enhance the nation’s ability to be globally competitive within the quantum information science (QIS) realm.

Sen. John Thune’s (R-SD) Quantum Network Infrastructure and Workforce Development Act would strengthen national security by advancing domestic capabilities in quantum networking and establishing a comprehensive workforce development approach.

Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) presented the Quantum for Universal Advancement in Nationwide Technology Use and Modernization (QUANTUM) for National Security Act of 2021 as a means of bolstering Department of Defense (DoD) efforts to engage in QIS by utilizing existing partnerships, scholarships, and research programs within the agency.

“Since the bipartisan passage of the National Quantum Initiative Act (NQIA) in 2018, the United States has continued to make great strides in both fundamental and applied QIS research,” Thune said. “These bills build upon the success of the NQIA by supporting existing efforts and accelerating critical growth in the field.”

Hassan said quantum mechanics play a pivotal role in national security and the economy as well as at the forefront of innovative defense technologies aiding the military edge over China.

“I am glad to join Sen. Thune in introducing these bipartisan bills that will strengthen Department of Defense and Department of Energy efforts in quantum research and help encourage more young people to get into this critical field so that we can create jobs and keep America safe, secure and free,” she said.
