DHS S&T launches third virtual segment in whole-of-government R&D showcase

For the launch of the third series of the Virtual Whole-of-Government Research and Development (R&D) Showcase this week, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) is looking to address upcoming scientific fields changing the world and how it handles threats.

It’s the latest iteration of the four-part series’ overarching theme: Unifying Research to Work for You. All are meant to show how not only S&T but also its governmental partners are utilizing R&D to reduce risks from natural and human-spurred disasters, advancing discoveries and preparations to aid against future threats. This latest series in the showcase addresses interoperable communications for first responders, advanced analytics for critical infrastructure, digital security, and air domain awareness.

“Getting ahead of emerging threats is critical for the future health and safety of our people, our communities, and our world,” Kathryn Coulter-Mitchell, DHS senior official performing the duties of the Under Secretary for Science and Technology, said. “The government research community and our industry partners are constantly assessing the threat landscape, as well as advancements in science and technologies that can help us stay ahead of whatever is next on the horizon.”

S&T and its partners will participate in the showcase through a mix of panel discussion videos, ebooks, feature articles, and other resources. At large, the showcase also includes COVID-19 threat characterization and assessment, disaster preparedness, infrastructure resilience, cybersecurity, opioid detection, securing public transit, drone operations, and more. All existing series are available on the showcase website, and Series 4 will follow on Aug. 9, covering the building of whole-of-government R&D partnerships.
