Battelle touts efforts combatting chemical, biological threats

Battelle recently showcased its Resource Effective Bioidentification System (REB+) and Multi-Threat Decontamination System (MTDS) as a means of demonstrating efforts to combat Chemical/Biological (CB) threats.

The demonstration stemmed from the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) funding its Chemical and Biological Operational Analysis (CBOA) event, providing researchers a chance to garner military leader input amid the CB defense technologies development stage.

Battelle maintains REBS+ reduces response time while increasing sensitivity, enabling detection of lower levels of target agents. Aerosol collection and optical improvements are needed, and the CBOA event plays a vital role in lending insight regarding needed improvements to create the most optimized solution.

Meanwhile, Battelle noted the MTDS system merges chemical and biological decontamination technologies to form a single scalable system designed to be mission-ready and reliable, serving as the next evolution for decontamination of critical equipment, unmanned systems, sensors, and electronics without degradation.

Fully housed with a single container, Battelle said the MTDS makes transportation simple while implementation and dismantling is minimal. The chamber and decontaminate generation is fully integrated, allowing for a building-block approach to scaling.

The features present a forward-deployable, platoon level decontamination system scalable to support a company level.
