Measure targets U.S-Israel AI development

A group of lawmakers have introduced a bill that seeks to establish a U.S.-Israel Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research and Development Center.

Reps. Jake Auchincloss (D-MA), Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH), Grace Meng (D-NY), Dean Phillips (D-MN), and Mike Waltz (R-FL) presented the legislation as a means of advancing AI bilateral cooperation while contributing to the field’s expansion.

“As the United States pivots away from the failed forever wars, we must recommit ourselves to strong alliances with friends and be prepared to compete with the emerging threat of the CCP,” Auchincloss said. “Partnering with Israel and developing an Artificial Intelligence Research Center will help our generation lead in R&D globally. By investing in the technologies of the future with our allied partners, we can build an economy that prepares us to tackle the challenges of the next generation.”

The Secretary of State, in concert with the Secretary of Commerce and the heads of other domestic agencies, would establish the Center, which would serve as a research and development hub for AI across the public, private and education sectors.

“Israel is our most important and closest ally in the Middle East, and we need to make sure that our partnership in joint-security also extends into emerging technology,” Gonzalez said. “We know that the development of effective artificial intelligence is crucial to both ours and Israel’s national interests.”

Waltz said collaborating and investing in research and development critical to national security such as Artificial Intelligence makes the world a safer place.
