Bill seeks to avert biomedical research threats

U.S. Rep. John Joyce (R-PA) has introduced a bill he said seeks to protect from foreign threats biomedical research conducted or funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH).

The Securing and Fortifying Everyday Biomedical Research Act (SAFE Biomedical Research Act – H.R. 5626) would ensure medical facilities receiving domestic grants can conduct research safely, shield sensitive information and place American security first.

“I am proud to sponsor the SAFE Biomedical Research Act that would support our research priorities while also ensuring they do not fall into the hands of hostile actors,” Joyce said. “The research conducted and sponsored by the NIH makes great strides in medical innovation, and we must ensure that it is never used to harm or attack our citizens.”

The legislation requires the Director of the National Institutes of Health to consult with the Director of National Intelligence, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), and other heads of appropriate security agencies regarding national security issues impacting NIH biomedical research.

Additionally, the measure also ensures biomedical research conducted by grant recipients would be thoroughly vetted to address the nation’s safety.
