NSA, CISA issue 5G cloud infrastructure guidance

National Security Agency (NSA) and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) personnel have issued 5G cloud infrastructure guidance the agencies indicated address building and configuration.

“This series provides key cybersecurity guidance to configure 5G cloud infrastructure,” Natalie Pittore, chief of Enduring Security Framework (ESF) in NSA’s Cybersecurity Collaboration Center, said. “Our team examined priority risks so that we could provide useful guidance, disseminated in an actionable way to help implementers protect their infrastructure.”

Authorities noted Security Guidance for 5G Cloud Infrastructures: Prevent and Detect Lateral Movement serves as the initial offering of a four-part series created by the ESF – a public-private working group providing cybersecurity instruction addressing high priority cyber-based infrastructure threats.

The guidance scope of work focuses on the primary 5G cloud infrastructure security challenges identified by ESF. The four-part series of instructional documents targeting the challenges will be released over the next few weeks.

Securely isolating network resources; protecting data in transit, in use, and at rest; and ensuring the integrity of the network infrastructure will be among the broached topics.

“Strong and vibrant partnerships are critical to the overall effort to reduce cyber risk,” Alaina Clark, CISA assistant director for Stakeholder Engagement, said. “Along with our public and private partners in the ESF, CISA is proud to partner with NSA to present the Security Guidance series for 5G Infrastructure. Protecting 5G cloud infrastructure is a shared responsibility, and we encourage 5G providers, operators, and customers to review the new guidance.”

The documents document would provide measures to secure the 5G cloud from lateral movement cyber threats possessing the potential to compromise a network.
