Smiths Detection secures DHS contract

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office (CWMD) has awarded a contract to Smiths Detection to provide 110 radiation portal monitors (RPM).

The RPMs would be deployed across land border crossings throughout the country. The passive checkpoints possess the capability to detect radiation emitting material passing through the detection zone while scanning trucks, vehicles, containers, packages, and people.

“We are delighted to announce our new contract with the DHS Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office, continuing our relationship after the initial contract award for test unit RPMs in January 2019,” Smiths Detection Inc. President Shan Hood said. “Smiths Detection is dedicated to making the world a safer place, and the deployment of 110 RPMs across land border crossings in the U.S. is testament to this. The RPMs will deliver 24/7 screening, 365 days a year, offering industry-leading efficiency and effectiveness.”

Hood said the company’s broad experience with radiation detection and checkpoint solutions, supplemented by data solutions investments, makes cutting-edge screening technology a present reality.

Authorities noted Smiths Detection announced its initial DHS Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction contract in January 2019 and said the RPMs would be deployed between December 2021 and May 2023.
