DoD selects Anchorage to host Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has identified Anchorage, Alaska, as the sole candidate city to host the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies.

The DoD would continue to navigate the Department of the Air Force Strategic Basing process to evaluate facilities within Anchorage to finalize the site selection.

The facility will honor the legacy of the late Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK), adding he was a devoted public servant and a World War II airlift pilot who dedicated efforts in support of Alaska statehood while recording several legislative achievements advancing domestic interests and leveraging the role Alaska provides in supporting national security in the Arctic, North American and
Pacific regions.

Under the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021, the Secretary of Defense established the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies, representing the Department of Defense’s sixth Regional Center for Security Studies.

The Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies seeks to build strong and sustainable domestic and international networks of security leaders while promoting and conducting Arctic security research advancing DoD Arctic region security priorities.

Four mission areas include advanced Arctic awareness among partners and within the professionalized field of Arctic military service, advancing DoD Arctic priorities, reinforcing the rules-based order in the Arctic, and addressing regional impacts of climate change.
