BARDA initiates second phase in $500,000 contest for new mask prototypes

For a world where masks are among the new norms, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) has launched the second phase of a $500,000 contest to develop creative, comfortable, and effective new mask designs for the public.

For this competition, BARDA is working with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which promotes innovation and industrial competition through science, standards, and technology that improve daily life. It is also working with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the administrator of the U.S. respirator approval program.

The first phase of the competition concluded in June. In that round, 10 winning concepts were selected and asked to split $100,000 in prize money. 

This latest phase doubles down by asking candidates to meet a series of criteria, addressing problems such as the traditionally unknown performance capabilities of retail masks, physical discomfort from prolonged use, discomfort due to breathing resistance, irritation from extended wear, the muffling of speech and facial expressions, and fogged glasses. While bearing these annoyances in mind, BARDA also reminded innovators that masks must still be capable of helping curb the spread of respiratory infections or environmental hazards such as pollution or smoke.

NIOSH and NIST labs will test how well any prototypes perform in terms of filtration, breathability, comfort, and tolerability. Contestants are also encouraged to consider unique features such as sensors, transparency, reusability, and designs that improve speech recognition. Eligible designs cannot use:

1. Prophylactic chemical treatments
2. Contract tracing apps
3. Self-contained breathing apparatus or supplied air design
4. Accessories or modifications for NIOSH-approved respirators or Food and Drug Administration-approved surgical masks

To win, participants must also be U.S. citizens, legal residents, or U.S.-owned businesses operating in-country. 

As many as four winners could be selected to split the remaining $400,000 on offer through this competition. BARDA will also assist winners in completing development and accessing start-up resources through its Accelerator Network.
